Risk Assessment
This Risk Assessment applies to all club group rides, including Saturday main club rides, Sunday social rides, organised events, training rides, and mid-week social rides. The aim is to manage and mitigate risks for all participants - experienced members, new members, young persons, and non-members. It underscores the club's commitment to safety and the ethos of looking out for one another.
Understanding Risks
- Hazard: A potential source of harm
- Risk: The likelihood of encountering the hazard
- Risk Classification: Using a points system, we classify risks as LOW, MEDIUM, or HIGH based on the combination of likelihood and severity
- Control Measures: Devised to reduce or eliminate risks, leaving us with the residual risk
Risk Matrix Classification
We use a points-based system to determine risk levels:
- Likelihood Score:
- 1 = Rare (May occur only in exceptional circumstances)
- 2 = Unlikely (Could occur at some time)
- 3 = Possible (Might occur at some time)
- 4 = Likely (Will probably occur in most circumstances)
- 5 = Almost certain (Expected to occur in most circumstances)
- Severity Score:
- 1 = Insignificant (No injuries, minor delay)
- 2 = Minor (First aid treatment, minor damage)
- 3 = Moderate (Medical treatment required, significant damage)
- 4 = Major (Extensive injuries, major damage)
- 5 = Catastrophic (Death, catastrophic damage)
- Risk Score = Likelihood × Severity
- Risk Level:
- LOW = Score of 1-6 (Generally acceptable, review periodically)
- MEDIUM = Score of 8-12 (Needs active management and controls)
- HIGH = Score of 15-25 (Requires immediate action and detailed planning)
Duties of Care
- Club Owner and Officers: Responsibilities to minimise foreseeable risks of injury, implement and communicate risk assessments, and ensure safe conduct of rides
- Ride Captains: Direct responsibility for ride safety and implementation of control measures
- Members: Duty of care towards themselves, fellow riders, and the public
