What a lovely weekend at Surrey Cycling Club! The weather was great this week! ☀️

Over Saturday and Sunday, our members were out cycling in so many different places! Where did you go? Find any nice spots? Tell us about it!

On Saturday we welcomed Mark, Roisin, and Cristian who joined us for our free demo rides. Great to meet you all. Fingers crossed we’ll see you again for another ride, or maybe as members!

On Saturday, six groups went out between 7:30am and 9am. Early ones got quiet roads, and the 9am group enjoyed the sun. A lot of people wore the summer kit with shorts. Looked spot on!

Sunday was just as good. Our Social + group rode to Windsor, taking in the views and a coffee break at Cinnamon. Meanwhile, G5 went through the Surrey Hills, stopping at Milk Churn for a classic cheese toasty!. The scenery was brilliant, the chat was fun, and the legs worked hard! 🥵

It was ace seeing so many members out, enjoying the rides and the company. Check our website and come along next time!

Say hello to our brilliant Club Member Hannah @scottie.8.2 👋🏻

Hannah started riding in our G4, got the hang of it fast, and soon took on G5 rides like a pro. She’d often cycle home from work at her race pace, rocking up just in time for our Summer Wednesdays Chain-Gang sessions around Windsor, she smashed heaps of QOMs, seriously quick! 👑

Last August, Hannah traded Surrey for Dubai with a new job and stumbled into racing. She kicked off with the Hudayriat Women’s Cycling Series in Abu Dhabi, four races covering 180 km total, and absolutely shone. Podiums every round, a cracking 1st in Race 2, and 2nd overall in her age group. Then she tackled L’Étape Dubai and the Spinneys Cycling Series, grabbing three more podiums.

Her big moment came at the Dubai Gran Fondo. Racing 92 km with the elites, she hit 64 kph at her peak, averaging 44.28 kph.

She finished 14th among the women, 2nd in her category, and nabbed a spot at the Gran Fondo World Championships in Australia this October. Hannah, we’re dead proud of you, flying those SCC colours! Wishing you all the luck in Oz. Smash it, you absolute star! ⭐️ 🚴‍♀️

What a way to kick off 2025 with Surrey Cycling Race Team! The ART Winter Warmer Race 1 at Abingdon Dalton Barracks fired up the season with a bang. Our team’s growing fast, and this weekend John, Raf, and Pete tackled the Cat 4 race. We wished for dry conditions, but no such luck! Still, with 42 riders in the mix, Raf nabbed a brilliant 6th place. Great stuff! 🚴‍♂️

Next up, Jamie and Kyle teamed up for the Cat 3 race. They pushed hard, even sparking a five-man breakaway for a couple of laps before the pack regrouped. The racing was electric all morning, huge congrats to the winners and the organisers! Check out the action shots on our Facebook page.

What a weekend at Surrey Cycling Club! Saturday was a lively one, with four groups rolling out despite damp roads, swirling winds, and a few showers. Our G4 riders powered through a cracking 120+ km ride to Alton and Lasham Airfield, loving every minute of the challenge. Meanwhile, G2 and G3 kept things closer to home, looping around Gold Valley Lakes and The Lake House, splashing through puddles and taking in the local sights. Everyone came back buzzing, with just a couple of punctures to sort out. No surprise there, it’s all part of cycling this time of year! 🚴‍♂️

Surrey Cyclists, it has been a while!

We have been a little quiet but only because it has been too cold to take our hands out for photos! ❄️ That said, our bravest riders continue to get out on the roads no matter the temperature 🥶

Today was extra special as four of our club members proudly represented Surrey Cycling Club at the Gil Jessop Memorial Sporting 14, hosted by Kingston Wheelers @kingstonwheelers .

This TT event, held on the GS 292A sporting course, honours former club president Gil Jessop. Riders tackled a tough course starting in Hungry Hill Lane near Ripley, competing in both time trial and road bike categories, with equal prizes for men and women as well as juniors and vets!

With over 50 riders taking part, the atmosphere was fantastic. A huge shoutout to the organisers and the amazing volunteers who made this event happen. Without marshals and support crews, time trials like these would not be possible!

What a Start to the Year! ⭐️ We are still buz

What a Start to the Year! ⭐️

We are still buzzing - and no, not from storm Éowyn, though it did set the tone for an epic Saturday ride!

This weekend marked the debut of our G6 ride, an effort-based group where speeds can exceed 40 km/h on the flats, depending on the riders. Think G5, but with a turbocharged edge!

What made it extra special? Joining us was Rory Townsend @rorytownsendcyclist Irish National Road Race Champion (2022) and rider for UCI ProTeam Q36.5. Rory has raced on some of the world’s biggest stages, including the World Championships and European Games, and has victories in the Tour of Britain under his belt. Riding with Rory was as inspiring as it was humbling – his effortless speed and sportsmanship were something to behold! Thank you Rory 🙌🏻

Adding to the excitement was Kyle @kiho_choi former Hong Kong Cycling Representative at the London Olympic Games. Kyle is not only a phenomenal athlete but also a passionate mentor, inspiring young riders through his journey - he inspire us on every club ride! ⭐️ thanks Kyle!

Led by our Ride Captain Jamie, this brisk and spicy G6 ride saw teamwork, fast-paced pulls, and a bit of friendly competition. The sunshine even made a guest appearance – a perfect start to the year!

As we wrap up the year, we want to take a moment to reflect on an incredible 2024 and celebrate everything we’ve achieved as a club. It’s been a year of growth, progress, and so many memorable moments on and off the saddle.

📈 Membership Growth
We’ve grown by an amazing 40%! Starting the year with 119 members, we’re finishing with 168. A warm welcome to all our new members - it’s been great having you join the SCC community.

🚴‍♀️ Female Participation
We’re proud to be leading the way, with female participation climbing close to 20%, well above the UK average. Let’s keep building on this in 2025!

📊 Club Effort Stats
This year, we collectively:

Rode 562,009 km – that’s over 14 times around the world! 🌍
Climbed 3,786,661 m – higher than 428 Mount Everests 🏔️
Spent 22,370 hours on the saddle – almost 2.5 years non-stop!
Completed 14,303 rides – and every single one counts.

Thank you to @strava for making it possible to track these incredible achievements.

🏆 Race Team Milestones
2024 was a fantastic debut year for our new race team. We launched a stunning new kit, partnered with amazing sponsors, and some of our riders are already competing in Cat3. The journey has just begun!

💪 Overcoming Challenges
It wasn’t all smooth roads – we faced challenges, obstacles, and the occasional copycats. But our supportive, like-minded community stood strong, and together, we’ve come out stronger.

It’s that time of year again when Strava wraps up our Year in Sport, and we get to look back on all the incredible achievements from our club and its amazing members!

Last night, we celebrated in style with our Christmas Dinner at the @redlion_shepperton in Shepperton. Around 50 of us came together for an evening of good food, laughter, and a toast to the year’s accomplishments. From smashing leaderboards and tackling hill climbs to going above and beyond, every member has contributed to what makes this club so special.

A big thank you to our fantastic sponsors and partners who’ve supported us throughout the year. A special mention to @kalas_sportswear for being our main kit and race partner, Muc-Off @mucoff for treating our Ride Leaders with top-notch bike maintenance kits, and our Club Officers for those exciting Mystery Boxes!

For the second year running, we’re also grateful to Maison du Vélo @maison_du_velo for their Bike Fit vouchers and workshop course discounts – what a way to keep us rolling smoothly!

Autumn vibes in full swing! 🍂

Saturday morning and we still have riders in shorts – proof winter hasn’t fully arrived yet! What a brilliant turnout for November! A warm welcome to Paul, who joined us for his first club ride, and to David, joining us for his first demo. We hope our fantastic ride leaders – Sirous, Adrian, Ian, and Terence – showed you the best of Surrey Cycling Club hospitality and that you enjoyed the company of our incredible members!

Our G4 and G5 groups rode to Henley via Sonning, with a well-deserved stop at the Chocolate Cafe @chocolatecafehenley - The route covered over 105KM with 500m of elevation – a good mix of distance and challenge! Meanwhile, our G2 and G3 groups headed to Elstead for a cosy stop at The Little Barn Café, with a shorter 80KM route but a bit more climbing at 650m.

All groups returned safe and sound, ready for Sunday’s social ride to Windsor’s Cinnamon Cafe @cinnamoncafewindsor . Here’s to more autumn adventures ahead!

Did you venture out today, or did the drizzle keep you inside? C’mon, it’s just water! 😉 Despite the weather, we had a fantastic turnout – three groups tackled the Surrey Hills for a short but punchy ride, with a well-deserved stop at Heartworks Coffee Bar. @heartworkcoffee

Our G2 group spun their way to Guildford, enjoying coffee at Elm Farm for a perfect Saturday morning escape.

As we move into winter, we’re starting all rides at 9am on both Saturday and Sunday, with slightly shorter routes – some may even be non-stop! For those keen to go the extra mile, we’ll keep mixing things up. Today, an additional G4 ride headed out to Hindhead & Devil’s Punchbowl for those who missed it last week. Shoutout to Captain Ian R @bikerboyian2447 for leading the charge – the photos look epic!

A warm welcome to Cheryl, who’s joined the club after two demo rides and jumped straight into the Surrey Hills action! Here’s to many more!

With the clocks now set to 9am for all club and social rides, we’re adjusting to shorter winter routes as the colder temps approach. Expect some “non-stop” rides too, with a cosy regroup at the Hand & Spear for post-ride coffee and chat. ☕️

Rest assured, there’s no hibernation for us! We’ll keep rolling with our club and social rides as long as the weather’s on our side.

Today, we held our first hill climb event at Staple Lane, as part of our club ride to The Milk Churn. Though it wasn’t an official event, it was a brilliant effort by all, and we want to congratulate our winners and everyone who took part – it’s all about the experience!

Shout-out to the winners:
For the women’s category, congratulations to Athena for topping the leaderboard 🥇, with Jacinta taking second place 🥈- 👏
In the men’s category, well done to our race legend Jamie for taking first place 🥇, followed by Neil in second 🥈, and Rafal securing third 🥉!

But it’s not just about winning – it’s about showing up, having fun, and being part of the challenge! Huge kudos to all 14x club members who participated today! 💪

Once the event wrapped up, we rode to our final destination for some well-deserved cheese toasties and coffee! 🧀☕

Hey Surrey riders, it’s been a while! We took a short break from posting our weekly updates. Let’s jump into last week’s efforts:

🌟 Total Rides: 257

🚀 Total Distance: 9,823 km – That’s like cycling from Surrey to the Sahara and back!

🏔️ Total Elevation: 65,758 m – Climbing over seven Mount Everests, one pedal stroke at a time.

⏰ Total Time in the Saddle: 391 hours – More than 16 days of non-stop cycling.

👥 Active Members: 90 out of 160 – Wow, what a week!

🏅 Leaderboard Spotlight: Big congrats to James H for topping the leaderboard for the first time this year with an impressive 314 km! James is one of our newest members – it’s like he joined us yesterday and is already leading the pack. James, if this is how you start, we’re a bit scared (and very impressed) to see what you’ll do next!

📈 Highlights:
✨ While this wasn’t our highest week of 2024, it was a solid one with loads of strong performances.
✨ Participation remains high, and our members are keeping the club rolling forward.

Today, we put our group riding skills to the test in real-world conditions - traffic lights, roundabouts, cities - to see how fast we could complete the 100KM Challenge!

Huge kudos to Terence, Kyle, our videographer for the day, Graham, Tanya, and Mark for braving the grim, wet conditions to take on the challenge!

The route was just over 100KM with about 370m of elevation, so definitely not flat. The group started strong with 5 riders, but slowly whittled down to 3 (Terence, Kyle, and Graham) who completed the challenge in impressive times:

100K: 2:52:18
90K: 2:33:57
50 miles: 2:16:55
80K: 2:16:13
