🎉 2024: What a Year for Surrey Cycling Club! 🎉

As we wrap up the year, we want to take a moment to reflect on an incredible 2024 and celebrate everything we’ve achieved as a club. It’s been a year of growth, progress, and so many memorable moments on and off the saddle.

📈 Membership Growth
We’ve grown by an amazing 40%! Starting the year with 119 members, we’re finishing with 168. A warm welcome to all our new members - it’s been great having you join the SCC community.

🚴‍♀️ Female Participation
We’re proud to be leading the way, with female participation climbing close to 20%, well above the UK average. Let’s keep building on this in 2025!

📊 Club Effort Stats
This year, we collectively:

Rode 562,009 km – that’s over 14 times around the world! 🌍
Climbed 3,786,661 m – higher than 428 Mount Everests 🏔️
Spent 22,370 hours on the saddle – almost 2.5 years non-stop!
Completed 14,303 rides – and every single one counts.

🏆 Race Team Milestones
2024 was a fantastic debut year for our new race team. We launched a stunning new kit, partnered with amazing sponsors, and some of our riders are already competing in Cat3. The journey has just begun!

💪 Overcoming Challenges
It wasn’t all smooth roads – we faced challenges, obstacles, and the occasional copycats. But our supportive, like-minded community stood strong, and together, we’ve come out stronger.

It’s that time of year again when Strava wraps up our Year in Sport, and we get to look back on all the incredible achievements from our club and its amazing members!

Last night, we celebrated in style with our Christmas Dinner at the @redlion_shepperton in Shepperton. Around 50 of us came together for an evening of good food, laughter, and a toast to the year’s accomplishments. From smashing leaderboards and tackling hill climbs to going above and beyond, every member has contributed to what makes this club so special.

A big thank you to our fantastic sponsors and partners who’ve supported us throughout the year. A special mention to @kalas_sportswear for being our main kit and race partner, Muc-Off @mucoff for treating our Ride Leaders with top-notch bike maintenance kits, and our Club Officers for those exciting Mystery Boxes!

For the second year running, we’re also grateful to Maison du Vélo @maison_du_velo for their Bike Fit vouchers and workshop course discounts – what a way to keep us rolling smoothly!

We’ve tracked some serious mileage this year (thanks to Strava!), and we’ll be sharing a full breakdown of our collective efforts just before the end of the year. Let’s keep the momentum going as we close out 2024 on a high!

Autumn vibes in full swing! 🍂

Saturday morning and we still have riders in shorts – proof winter hasn’t fully arrived yet! What a brilliant turnout for November! A warm welcome to Paul, who joined us for his first club ride, and to David, joining us for his first demo. We hope our fantastic ride leaders – Sirous, Adrian, Ian, and Terence – showed you the best of Surrey Cycling Club hospitality and that you enjoyed the company of our incredible members!

Our G4 and G5 groups rode to Henley via Sonning, with a well-deserved stop at the Chocolate Cafe @chocolatecafehenley - The route covered over 105KM with 500m of elevation – a good mix of distance and challenge! Meanwhile, our G2 and G3 groups headed to Elstead for a cosy stop at The Little Barn Café, with a shorter 80KM route but a bit more climbing at 650m.

All groups returned safe and sound, ready for Sunday’s social ride to Windsor’s Cinnamon Cafe @cinnamoncafewindsor . Here’s to more autumn adventures ahead!

Did you venture out today, or did the drizzle keep you inside? C’mon, it’s just water! 😉 Despite the weather, we had a fantastic turnout – three groups tackled the Surrey Hills for a short but punchy ride, with a well-deserved stop at Heartworks Coffee Bar. @heartworkcoffee

Our G2 group spun their way to Guildford, enjoying coffee at Elm Farm for a perfect Saturday morning escape.

As we move into winter, we’re starting all rides at 9am on both Saturday and Sunday, with slightly shorter routes – some may even be non-stop! For those keen to go the extra mile, we’ll keep mixing things up. Today, an additional G4 ride headed out to Hindhead & Devil’s Punchbowl for those who missed it last week. Shoutout to Captain Ian R @bikerboyian2447 for leading the charge – the photos look epic!

A warm welcome to Cheryl, who’s joined the club after two demo rides and jumped straight into the Surrey Hills action! Here’s to many more!

The autumn spirit is in full swing, and it truly set the scene for our rides this past weekend! Despite a few showers and wet roads, over 32 members joined across our groups – proving a little rain never dampens our spirits!

With the clocks now set to 9am for all club and social rides, we’re adjusting to shorter winter routes as the colder temps approach. Expect some “non-stop” rides too, with a cosy regroup at the Hand & Spear for post-ride coffee and chat. ☕️

Rest assured, there’s no hibernation for us! We’ll keep rolling with our club and social rides as long as the weather’s on our side.

Today, we held our first hill climb event at Staple Lane, as part of our club ride to The Milk Churn. Though it wasn’t an official event, it was a brilliant effort by all, and we want to congratulate our winners and everyone who took part – it’s all about the experience!

Shout-out to the winners:
For the women’s category, congratulations to Athena for topping the leaderboard 🥇, with Jacinta taking second place 🥈- 👏
In the men’s category, well done to our race legend Jamie for taking first place 🥇, followed by Neil in second 🥈, and Rafal securing third 🥉!

But it’s not just about winning – it’s about showing up, having fun, and being part of the challenge! Huge kudos to all 14x club members who participated today! 💪

Once the event wrapped up, we rode to our final destination for some well-deserved cheese toasties and coffee! 🧀☕

🌟 Total Rides: 257

🚀 Total Distance: 9,823 km – That’s like cycling from Surrey to the Sahara and back!

🏔️ Total Elevation: 65,758 m – Climbing over seven Mount Everests, one pedal stroke at a time.

⏰ Total Time in the Saddle: 391 hours – More than 16 days of non-stop cycling.

👥 Active Members: 90 out of 160 – Wow, what a week!

🏅 Leaderboard Spotlight: Big congrats to James H for topping the leaderboard for the first time this year with an impressive 314 km! James is one of our newest members – it’s like he joined us yesterday and is already leading the pack. James, if this is how you start, we’re a bit scared (and very impressed) to see what you’ll do next!

📈 Highlights:
✨ While this wasn’t our highest week of 2024, it was a solid one with loads of strong performances.
✨ Participation remains high, and our members are keeping the club rolling forward.

Another week, another story! And this one is prett

Another week, another story! And this one is pretty awesome.

Today, we put our group riding skills to the test in real-world conditions - traffic lights, roundabouts, cities - to see how fast we could complete the 100KM Challenge!

Huge kudos to Terence, Kyle, our videographer for the day, Graham, Tanya, and Mark for braving the grim, wet conditions to take on the challenge!

The route was just over 100KM with about 370m of elevation, so definitely not flat. The group started strong with 5 riders, but slowly whittled down to 3 (Terence, Kyle, and Graham) who completed the challenge in impressive times:

100K: 2:52:18
90K: 2:33:57
50 miles: 2:16:55
80K: 2:16:13

Happy Monday! What a Weekend! 🎉

This weekend was a special one for Surrey Cycling Club as we celebrated our 4th anniversary! It’s hard to believe the club has been running for four years - with two years spent growing it into the incredible cycling community we have today.

To mark the occasion, we had some fantastic rides. Our G5 and G4 groups ventured to Nettlebed - with a stop at The Cheese Shed @nettlebedcheese covering an impressive 125KM. It was a chilly start, with just 5°C in the morning. It felt like we’d woken up in November! But the ride was amazing, with great company and beautiful routes.

Meanwhile, our G2 and G3 groups headed to Cookham - stopping at Flat Harry for some well-earned coffee and cake.

We also had a warm welcome for many Demo riders over the weekend, with Graham and Jonathan already joining us as full members!

At Surrey Cycling Club, it’s all about the people - whether we’re enjoying a relaxed ride, pushing each other’s limits, or just laughing together during a pit stop. This club has helped so many of us make lifelong friends and accomplish things we never thought possible - like cycling from Weybridge to Portsmouth, around the Isle of Wight, and back in one day!

Adventure in the Chilterns and Berkshire!

What a packed weekend we’ve just had! Despite the sun hiding behind foggy clouds, we saw a great turnout for the start of September. Our strong G5 group headed to the beautiful Chilterns, with a well-deserved stop at the Chiltern Velo
@chilternvelo - The ride was a challenging 150KM with 1000 meters of elevation-an impressive effort by all!

Meanwhile, the rest of our groups explored Berkshire, making a stop at the lovely Fernygrove Farm Shop @fernygrovefarm - Although the ride was shorter, it still covered 87KM with 400 meters of elevation, making for a great day on the saddle.

A big welcome to Chloe and James, who joined us for their first demo ride and have since become members! Our Surrey Cycling Club family continues to grow week by week, and we couldn’t be more excited!

As our Isle of Wight trip was approaching fast, we

As our Isle of Wight trip was approaching fast, we decided to take on an even bigger challenge. Inspired by our friends at GCN, Conor and Ollie, who tackled the epic feat in their episode Sunrise to Sunset | Could You Ride 200 Miles In One Day? back in 2021, we set out to cycle from Weybridge to Portsmouth, ride around the Isle of Wight, and then make the journey back to Weybridge - a whopping 320+ KM Audax ride!

We started in the dark, setting off from Weybridge at 5:30am. The trip to Portsmouth was perfectly executed, with the group maintaining an average speed of approximately 30 kph to make the ferry crossing on time. Everything was calculated down to the minute, and when we arrived in Ryde, we were greeted by another 30 members who were just starting their ride around the Island.

Our first lunch stop was at The Needles, which marked the halfway point of our adventure at around 170 KM. After a much-needed 40-minute break, we continued our journey. The conditions around the Island were generally good, though overcast with occasional short showers.

We raced back to Ryde for the 4:15pm ferry, making it with only a few minutes to spare! After crossing back to Portsmouth, we embarked on the final leg of our journey - 100KM back to Weybridge with 900 meters of climbing. The last 30 KM were particularly tough; the chit-chat stopped, and everyone had their heads down, pushing through the wind and focusing on getting home.

We finally reached the Hand and Spear just before 9 PM, with a total moving time of 10:58:17 and an average speed of almost 29 km/h with over 3200m of total elevation!

It was an incredible day filled with strong camaraderie and a fantastic group effort. We’re already looking forward to our next big adventure!

Our Annual Isle of Wight trip was absolutely amazing this year! We had the biggest turnout ever, with over 35 club members and guests meeting up in Portsmouth for an unforgettable ride around the Isle of Wight. This year, we rode anti-clockwise, covering a total of 117KM with over 1500 meters of elevation!

It was an incredible day with many members achieving their longest rides ever. With multiple groups to choose from, everyone had a fantastic time on the saddle!

A 70KM loop meant most people were back before 11am, giving them enough time to get ready for our annual Summer drinking night with our members, friends and their families. We had an amazing turnout with over 60 people enjoying each other’s company. A big thanks to Hand and Spear @handandspearpub for your hospitality! It was a fantastic evening, and it was great to see and meet everyone, their friends, and family!

We are slowly gearing up for our annual trip to the Isle of Wight at the end of August! In the meantime, we have a few weekends left with some amazing routes planned for the entire month of August.
